SOTD – “Fugitive” – David Gray

I'm back bitches! In BCS form

That’s it. The college football regular season is officially over. You can now return to your regularly scheduled lives for another 2 weeks until bowl games begin. Also, now we get to see 27 coaches play musical chairs with their jobs. If you are BCS hater, how much do you like TCU-Boise part 2? Not only is it a rematch of their bowl matchup last year in the Fiesta Bowl, but it’s the BCS’s way of telling the non-AQ schools that they are “separate but equal.” Aside from the fact that I think TCU beats Texas 8 times out of 10, and is the number 2 team in the nation, I just don’t think the matchup for the Jim Crow bowl is that compelling this year.

What I hate about the bowl system is all the conference tie-ins, causing stupid match-ups to occur. I really wouldn’t mind the bowl system if the BCS was gone, and there was one committee deciding on all the bowl games based on national title implications, exciting match-ups and regional interest in the games. There are so many bowl games now and I feel like 50% of them end up being boring or just less exciting because both teams could really care less about the game and opponent they got.

Houston Rockets - Kyle Lowry leads the league in offensive fouls drawn. Scrappy! Scola must have taught him some of the secret Argentinean flopping techniques. Maybe we’ll see him eating Bifa a caballa, or a churrasco steak with chimichurri sauce and drinking yerba mate.

Houston Texans - Choked again… Nothing like throwing an INT during crunch time, luckily other Houston football teams don’t do that. Oh wait, they do. This time I’m not upset with the decision to use that play in the red-zone (Tomlinson has double digit PASSING TDs in the redzone), but if you saw that Chris Brown throws the ball like a shot-put during practice, maybe you should seen that you don’t have the personnel to run that play. It’s ok, Dick Justice still likes Kubiak

Houston Cougars - Speaking of bowl rematches, the Coogs are going to the Armed Forces Bowl to play USAFA again. You know who won’t be there? Me. Because I’m a real Coog like that. Actually, the list of reasons is as follows:
1. There is nothing for me in the DFW area. Especially on New Years Eve, because I’m not putting on bronzer and spiking my hair to go out. Also, I refuse to give any unnecessary money to the DFW economy.
2. We already saw this game twice last year (in the DFW area), and I could care less to watch a good running team with a good pass defense expose the Coogs again.
3. I have 3 USAFA alums in my immediate family, and if they don’t care about the game (because they already played Army and Navy) why should I?
4.  It’s hard to live on the $0 per month I’m paid to work here.

In other Coogs news the final coaches poll was released and you can see how each coach voted here. I always like looking at that, it’s cool to finally be involved in it. Also Case Keenum has won the Sammy Baugh award for best QB.

  1. I have been wondering if you guys intend to go. I exchanged a few emails with Assistant Athletic Director of Ticket Sales, Mike Rea (to give him a piece of my mind because I am furious…you know how I do). His response was basically that they understand everyone’s disappointment, and feel like this game sets us up the best for next season. And I agree…if we win it does. However, Air Force is exactly the type of team that could dismantle our Coogs.

I bought 2 tickets to the game, but I’m not sure I’m taking off work and making the trip. I’ll make up my mind in a couple weeks. At this point I honestly can’t talk about the Coogs without talking about next season. This season is a bust. We threw it away in one play.

    • Same here.

I doubt I’m making a return visit to Ft Worth, especially after them dumb motherfuckers managed to RUN OUT OF HOT DOGS during halftime!

The hell if my beyond starving self was standing around for another 10 minutes for hot dogs when I had enough fun getting to that stand. I think I settled for two doses of nachos instead. You know, because that beggars being choosy thing doesn’t work and cold cheese is better than nothing!

Nevermind that someone fucked up and must have heard that I made the run up to Ft Worth right after leaving Reliant (front row seats, FTW! Even if it is Rice-WMU.) and figured that butting this game up with the Texas Bowl was a great idea for this go around! Was there really something important at non on Dec 30 that just made this scheduling happen? Sorry, Navy knocking of Mizzou would be more compelling to me.

I know this wouldn’t float on Coogfans, but some of them also think that slamming a couple of tight ends and fullbacks on the roster and managing to have a ground game to eat clock and help a thin defense would just “destroy the offensive philosophy”, so I’m not sure I care…Texas put a couple of TEs in the NFL even during the VY days. Where are you now, Mark Hafner!?! Yeesh.

      • How bout a goal line running back? Or goal line package with a full back to pound the ball in the red zone? We need to be able to do more than variations on RB draw plays and end arounds.

  2. My take is this, I am still considering going but me and the fam. will just be returning from an extended road trip for the holidays. Adding 4 more hours to drive up and come back BEFORE the nightly festivities will make things tight. I did go to the game last year and was obviously happy with the outcome, and the game was good. Note: For anyone that goes, they DO NOT SELL BEER IN THE STADIUM, it is TCU afterall. Although I know plenty of Christians that partake in the spirits…anyway. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

But I think I will take this one at either a bar or perhaps at the house (boring), since this WILL be the last game of the year and before everyone gets amped up for next year’s season.

At the start of the year, to say you will be at least a 10 win ball club…I would’ve cut a backflip. And as monsterous as the 3 losses were, I am still not going to forget the ‘Immaculate Deflection’, the ’2 Day Drive’, and the ’21 sec Graham Fuk’ EVAR! I have some really good memories to replace the 0-for-ALL in the not to distant past, and have something to look for for next year. I am also thinking of upgrading my season tix and adding one more for lil-oneton (he is over 3 and the free ride is done!).

Whatever happens in the bowl game, I am at peace with it. As pissed off as I was on Saturday, actually I am dealing better with it than I had the previous 2 losses.

All in all, I am happy. We are making progress and have shown glimpses of what we can become; I also think that if we can sustain these types of seasons there are going to be some bright times ahead for UofH…something I have been waiting for, for quite some time. EXTEND CKS’ CONTRACT!

    Big ups Coogs!

Kick the hell out of chAIR Force.

  3. Well, back in August when everyone was saying they thought the team would only win 8 or 9 games I FULLY expected we would win the conference and only lose 2 or 3. I thought we would lose to OSU (I thought they were better than they are), and probably Southern Miss, or our Liberty Bowl opponent. So this season dissapoints for me.

Well, the silver lining is that we’ve definitely improved the chances of retaining Sumlin for next season. Would have been a shame if he had lead us to a 1 or 2 loss season, where we didn’t make a BCS game. He’d still be the hottest commodity in college football, and might jump ship for Notre Dame or something. This way we probably get to keep him here for the 2010 season, which was always supposed to be THE YEAR.

    • Maybe that’s what Mack told Case. If you want to BCS bust next year and win the Heisman…you know what you have to do.

      Now it makes sense.

      • I love a good conspiracy theory…

      • Hahaha, talk about conspiracy theories! But yeah. on the replay you see it go right through his hands…so close.

Maybe the ‘Sumlin to Notre Dame’ talk is a bit early, he now has only 2 FULL seasons as a head coach…going to one of the most prestigous college progs in the nation is a bit of a reach. Keep in mind that he has only 2 bowl appearances and NO league titles. UofH is one thing, Notre Dame is something else. But I do like the thought process, that he is highly touted in the college ranks.

It just goes to show everyone that bringing back programs from the dead is a long road, and barely 2 years to show for it under Sumlin and I think we are light years ahead of where we should be at this point. Credit to Maggs who saw the potential in CKS, and btw we are still living with Maggs stuff…Mack has yet to really make his imprint here at Houston. Or said like this, ‘he aint got his hand in the kool-aid yet’.

Large fluid holding container, 1 packet red stuff, tons o’ sugar, mix with hand/arm, and serve. One BCS busting, Heizman Trophy candidate Football team coming right up.

But on the serious, if we just look at Boise State and TCU as to the recipe for busting the BcS, it is right there. Play ANYONE ANYWHERE. Win your conference, recruit in your state, fill up your stadium, and make OU look foolish in a bowl game for ALL to see!

I really think TCU got jobbed this year. And oh yeah, TCU, Cincy, USF, etc., ALL bolted from CUSA…I really think they were on to something.

        • I know that’s what Mack Rhoades told Keenum before the game. The Liberty Bowl isn’t our big goal anyway, and if we win it Sumlin is gone. Now, go out there and throw this game away so that Sumlin has to come back next year and you can win the Heisman, and we can go win a BCS game.

This is definitely what happened. Maybe Case came up with it all on his own, but he was definitely point shaving. Wether or not Sumlin comes back next year will make or break our season and also Keenum’s stock as a pro draft pick. That’s a lot of dollar signs to think about for Mack and Case. Not only that, but how horrible would it be for Case to have to play for a 3rd head coach in his college career? Especially one that might tank the stock that he built the last two years. There’s a lot of factors in play here, but I’m onto Mr. Keenum. I think he has set us up perfectly for next year. Excellent Work!!!

  4. That’s ridiculous. So keenum threw the ball to castile, their tall, outjump and get the football in a jump off reciever, knowing it was going to richocet off of the defender into another defenders arms on first down? Case is a good quaterback, but I don’t thinl he’s allah (let’s wait till next year). Also, if they wanted to keep sumlin, don’t you think that a win against arkansas (probably equating to a top 20 finish) and starting in the top 25 next year for a bcs busting run would be a better sell than winning the armed forces bowl against a mwc team and not starting in the top 25? Boise and tcu both started ranked and went undefeated. I’m acutually kind of glad we at least didn’t go undefeated (even though I woulve liked to win the conference) because we wouldve been the odd man out (no way we wouldve been picked over florida for a bcs bowl).

Frankly, is sumlin decides to leave fuck him. But I would understand. But patterson at tcu I think figured something out – the bcs is a joke, and it is easier to dominate the mwc than the sec, meaning an actual easier chance to get into a bcs bowl. That conspiracy theory is luiculous!

    • Yeah, what taco sayz…

I say he stays and RULEZ CUSA until either A) we move conferences or B) he trains his successor. If we can do the first and second thing above, UofH will be right where it needs to be for decades.

Yeah, your conspiracy is ludicrous as well!

      • No way…it is the truthz. If we had won the Liberty Bowl Sumlin would be all big and cockstrong and go take a job somewhere else. Now with a win in the Armed Forces, we get back in the Top 25. With our recruiting class and returning players we start next year in the Top 20. A Liberty Bowl win would have been best, but Case and Mack didn’t want to risk Sumlin looking like Black Superman and having every school in country riding his African Tiger Penis.

  5. The mwc I think has more respect than the acc and big east. I think the bcs is going to have to invite the mwc to the party, cause I think inevitably there’s going to be a mwc as a bcs buster every year under the current system

  6. I think that the loss saves us money in the short term by making Sumlin’s extension worth significantly less. And we can extend him again if he has a better season next year.

I still think AFA is a terrible match-up for us because we have everything to lose. We really won’t be noticed much whether we beat AFA or Texas Southern in a bowl, but if we lose a bowl the loss will be noticed more. Too bad Air Force plays the exact kind of game that kills us. We should have gone for the easy W in the big easy, and we would still start next season in the top 25 regardless.

    • EXACTLY. My conspiracy is a joke, btw, but what Pipez says here are my exact sentiments.

  7. Actually keenum may be jesus, he even has the blond hair and blue eyes. I changed my mind, the conspiracy theory holds water!

    • I definitely think Sumlin is a psychological master mind. On his interview on 610 after the UCF game he attacked John Lopez about starting rumors he was leaving UH. Then on his interview on 790 after the ECU game…which was a road game…he called out the UH fans for poor home attendance this season. (We actually increased our average by 4300/game, up 17%). Both times instead of fielding questions about the losses, coaching decisions, or deficiencies within the team, he deflected criticism onto someone else.

So I’m glad to see Keenum and Mack…the two masterminds that they are….outsmart the Outsmarter.

      • Sumlin will be leaving and be on another team in the 2012 season, unless we get into a better conference. Our defense will be better next year, especially since the 8 starter true freshmen will become sophmores and will hopefully bulk up for next year. I actually think that once again, C-USA will be picked apart in the next coming years. Our problem is our location – BCS conferences in this area are SEC and Big 12, and i don’t think either one of the conferences are interested in adding a commuter school with a possible 45,000 person stadium. At this point in time, TCU would be a better pick to join the conferences than us. Damn Anne Richards, that white supremecist bitch!!

        • The starting freshmen on defense will be starting Sophomores next year. Sophomores aren’t much better than Freshmen. I can see David Hunter and Zeke Riser being good players by the time they graduate, but will they be studs next year? Doubt it. They might be improved over this year, but that’s not saying much at all. The freshmen still wouldn’t be starters next year at 90% of schools. If this defense gets better it will be because of an infusion of external talent. JUCO OLB Sammy Brown commited to replace Cavness. There is a JUCO MLB that is highly interested in UH that would take over in the middle and move McGraw where he should be at OLB. The other OLB’s heal up their ACL’s and come back and we have good depth there. There is a list of about 10 defensive JUCO’s that are being targeted. Those guys are make or break for next years’ team. Throw in Jeffcoat and the defense could could be truly respectable.

  8. I know el rats penis grew between his frshmen and sophmore year, septimus grew thanks to hgh, pipez’s belly grew exponentially between his frshman and sophmore year, reginald keeps growing, and trg grew hornier but loved him some “a club.”. Only wanks has maintained his constant, 210 / 35% body fat numbers. If the coogs grow like our esteemed fafwriters, we’ll be in good shape!

  9. You bottom posters are ridiculous today.

I went to the bowl game against Kansas a few years ago. I think it was in DFW. I was so pissed after the game I decided to drive home, right then.

    The follies of youth.

    • Well there has to be some explanation for what happened.

So does that mean you’ve learned your lesson and won’t be going to the bowl game? Or even if we lose you will stick around in Fort Worth?
