Get my kicks from your eleventh hour. Won’t you give me some more?

But, I WANT it!!!! NOW! GIMMEE GIMMEE!
After the improbable wetting of the bed by the Italian national squad against Brazil, the US Soccer team finds themselves with the distinct pleasure of facing the number one team in the world this afternoon. Bloemfontein (say what?) will play host to the Federations Cup Quarterfinal match between Spain and the Stars and Stripes at 1:30 CST.
If you haven’t heard, this Spanish team is quite good. 35 games unbeaten with a 15 game winning streak (remember, there are ties in soccer, TRG) are streaks good enough for at least a tie in the record-setting department. The US appear to be little more than a bump in the road for España on their quest for a second International trophy in this year after winning Euro Cup 2008.
Head coach, Bill Bradley says that he’s “very confident” that the upset is possible. I am “very confident” that he was misquoted. I am “very confident” that the US side will come out like gangbusters, high off their romp over Egypt and get smacked in the mouth by Spain. A more acute description from Wanks, “The US will come in overconfident after the win over Egypt and get jack-hammered by the Spaniards.”
If you do have the fortune of watching the game this afternoon (HA! Skipping work for soccer! HA!) let me know how it goes as I will be sitting in my windowless office pretending not to write for a sports blog. Keep an eye on Fernando Torres the man that managed to score a hat-trick in 17 minutes against an over-matched Kiwi squad (not the bird, the New Zealanders).
Ok, ok… On to your Houston Sports updates:
ASTROS – Please tell me that the Kansas City Royals are good… Eh, not so much. Tired of losing to the NL Central the Houston Astros decided to take a stab at the American League falling to the Royals 2-1 last night. The game apparently unnotable except for KC Pitcher, Zack Greinke, batting in the 8-hole. OOOoooOOO, so cutting edge, Kansas City.
ROCKETS – The NBA Draft is just a day away (LIVE BLOG!!! WOOOO!!!) with pretty much no sure locks for any of the picks. Everybody’s new favorite Sabremetric-wise GM, Daryl Morey, says the “draft is deep for point guards”… And then he says the “talent pool is shallow.” I’m sure that means something, I just can’t figure it out. The NY Times had no qualms about publishing it, so who am I to judge.
TEXANS – In an attempt to ride the coat-tails of THE Random Guy, I too will post something about Fantasy Football analysis in regards to Steve Slaton. BOOYAH! Do you want the SS Slasher or Chris Johnson? There can be only one!
DYNAMO – Oscar de la Hoya is reaching deeeeeeep into his pockets for the new Houston soccer-specific stadium. Actually, I just made that up. But, the ownership group of the Dynamo is splitting the $80 Million bill for the new structure with the taxpayers, 75/25. Robertson is going to be lonely come next summer.
UNIVERSITY of HOUSTON – So. Much. Vinny. Raviele. He’s everywhere. It just won’t stop. One of my favorite things I read on a forum (a high school baseball forum if I remember correctly) was that he replaced his rant with an advertisement for his auto-theft deterrent. Classy. +1 for Vinny.

Never underestimate the awesomeness of leaving work early to watch soccer games. I try to do it on a weekly basis.
Its funny, I think your boss reads the blog, or at least he should, to help our numbers. You’d better be reading this, Wanks MaGruber’s boss!
Not to nitpick, but sabermetrics is specific to baseball, the SABR being “Society for American Baseball Research”. I’m sure you were just doing that to be ironical.
Anytime someone says “not to…”, what they actually mean is “to” do that exact thing. For example, “not to be a dick, but…” is 100% certain to be followed by something that is, in fact, very dick.
Not to be a (micro)managing asshole, but I would be more concerned with fact and spell-checking your posts. Clean up on aisle TRG.
Why fact check when everyone can bitch me out? Much more efficient that way. Besides, it was ESPN that was wrong with their outdated information. Don’t kill the messenger. And I have been spell-checking at least 42% of the posts. That’s up from 0% just several months ago.
I’m sure our loyal fans (n=2) are enjoying this back-and-forth.
Is this where I admit that in our first week of posting I wrote that “8 > 23″ in reference to Kobe and LeBron when in fact Kobe changed his number umpteen seasons ago to 24?
That wasn’t as bad as trading for Cat Mobley, who retired because of a heart condition. I forgot when I was looking for the salary filler for the McGrady trade, ESPN’s Trade Machine didn’t say anything.
I’m sure everyone is enjoying our breakup-and-makeup session.
