What in the world is going on with the Houston Texans? They picked up two players from the 0-16 Lions which are now earning more money than most of the team. They need to start taking care of the players that have already performed for the team. Dan Orlovsky and Shaun Cody both make more money than DeMeco Ryans and Steve Slaton. Don’t forget Sexy Rexy that guy is going to be making more than Duane Brown and Steve Slaton. Even with his league minimum salary he is going to be making more money than close to half the team. I like the Houston Texans a lot, but players being unhappy about their contracts could have some serious effects on overall team moral and performance. I can’t wait until some of these rookies sign their contracts and start banking more than the proven veterans. Case and soon to be point Brian Cushing and DeMeco Ryans. (The highlighted salaries are the remaining contract amounts divided by number of years left on contract)(The roster below will get smaller as cuts are made this summer)
The best player on the Texans and arguably the best receiver in the NFL, Andre Johnson is not the highest paid player on the team. Instead Dunta Robinson holds the top spot this year beating out Andre by over $4 Million (I’m not counting bonuses in this discussion otherwise Antonio Smith would hold this spot). Wasn’t Dunta complaining earlier this year about getting the Franchise Tag. Poor Dunta only gets an average of the top five players in his position after playing 11 games in 2008. At least you’re not DeMeco Ryans. That guy is a no limit soldier that hasn’t missed a single game in his career, and is set to make less money than Shaun Cody and Dan Orlovsky.
Let’s break this down by a few positions, reverse cowgirl if necessary, since some of our current starters probably feel they are getting f#$%ed monetarily. Starting with Running Back. The starter Steve Slaton makes less money than the back ups, Chris “no starts in 2008″ Brown and Ryan Moats. Don’t forget Vonta Leach if you are counting FBs. Brown and Leach are going to get close to $1 Million more than Slaton in 2009.
Shaun Cody is making more than Amobi Okoye? Really??? I don’t care what your argument is. There is no way he is worth over twice as much as Okoye.
Many of the productive players have made it clear that they are not happy with their contracts. Owen Daniels signed a 1 year deal worth $2.79 Million. Let’s see… there are 4 other tight ends on the team, and Owen signed a 1 year deal. I don’t think he will be spending the rest of his career with the Texans.
The Houston Texans may think they are getting bargains with some of these players like Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, Andre Johnson, Duane Brown, Steve Slaton et al. When in comes to the next payday, these players that have been vastly over-performing with respect to the amount of pay they are receiving are going to remember than instead of being taken care of, the Texans didn’t seem to mind taking advantage of the situation.

Dunta was crying because he didn’t get the respect from the team in the form of a long-term contract.
Players that don’t play full seasons usually deserve that sort of thing, you see?
Don’t forget that these are all base salaries that do not include incentives or signing bonuses. Mario made ALOT more money than what is being reported on here
Hey look at me, my name is Pipez, I try to make a clever points to invalidate an entire post. I am well aware the salaries I listed don’t include bonuses for years prior to 2009. I’m listing money paid in 2009 as was further evidenced by bonuses for 2009 column, and in the title of the article. Mario signed a 6 year $54 Million contract, compare that to Albert Haynesworth’s 7 year $100 Million contract. Is he underpaid by comparison? I believe the point of the post, is that many of the Texans are underpaid in terms of their performance.
“Mario made ALOT more money than what is being reported on here”. Made is past tense. 2009 is this year. He hasn’t “made” this money yet. Had I done a post on 2008 Salaries and Bonuses, your statement would have been correct.
Actually, although the money is “made” up front, the team has the rights to ask for prorated portions back, if for some reason the player were to breach the contract. So although it has already been paid, technically said player is still earning those bonuses until the contract expires. Therefor, the total compensation for the year must account for more than just salary to asses the true value.
In regards to Mario’s “rookie contract” vs Albert Haynesworth’s contract, they are not really able to be compared because Mario has never actually had to negotiate a contract based on the value he has acquired as a player, but only the value he had as the #1 overall draft pick. So it’s really like comparing apples to oranges. This is the same reason Slaton’s salary is so low, compared to the actual value he has to the team, since he is still paid based on his draft position
I can’t stand it when you two fight! Why can’t you remember the love you had for each other when you got married (in San Francisco, two years ago)?
Jeez, we hit the big-time like 2 days ago and already the fellowship stands on the edge of a knife (and if you get that reference, you’re a huge dork). Guys, hold it together until we go plantum. If we break up now, we’re Oasis. If we break up in 6 months, we’re N’Sync. Think about it.
Hahaha!!! Now that you mention it, I feel a little bad about my reaction.
RB ditched your P90X suggestion and went straight for the P90Cream&Clear program.
I hear that’s great for mood swings.
Pipez is just being argumentative. I can’t blame him though. It’s just his personality. He will argue about the color of the sky if you were to say it’s blue.
It’s not blue, more like a Cyan!
