May 31st Houston Sports FaF Smear (and Sad Owl)

You are just another white boy, thinking you’re so hard.  Take a step outside see what’s shakin’ in the real world.

Sad Owl iz sad.

Sad Owl iz sad.

Since the inception of this blog I can’t remember when we might have posted a picture of baseball.  Perhaps I’m just misremembering to make a point.  That point being that something outrageous happened yesterday in a baseball game that deserves top headline status…  The Owls LOST.

The Kansas State Wildcats handed the Rice Owls their first NCAA Regional LOSS in 14 games yesterday afternoon.  The Wildcats rallied behind the complete game pitching exposé by Humble alum A.J. Morris and UPSET top-seeded Rice 7-6.  Morris threw 144 pitches(!) in the win and survived the 9th inning donning of rally-caps by the Owls when they scored three runs and threatened to take the game away from K. State.

The LOSS moves the Owls down to the LOSERS bracket a place they haven’t been in five years.  Rice will be playing Xavier … well… about right now.  If they LOSE again hoping to avoid LOSING in the Regionals for the first time since 2004.

On to the rest of your Houston sports updates:

TEXANS – It’s about that time to start stretching for stories while we await training camps to really get into gear.  You have to scroll all the way down to read about offensive tackle, Eric Winston’s upper-deck blast in the Texans’ Home Run Derby at Minute Maid Park.  If that doesn’t tickle your pickle, how about a trip to Winston’s personal site?  EricWinston73.com Not bad.  It’s no Fourth and Fifty.  Still, not bad.

ROCKETS – I know that Pipez posted the story about T-Mac having surgery on his shoulder yesterday.  And, I know it’s in bad taste to continue to berate this guy for all of his short-comings (35 games this year… really?).  But the one thing that sticks out about this article is Daryl Morey’s quote of “I wouldn’t say it was necessary ” (emphasis added).  I’ve always been under the impression that if surgery isn’t necessary it shouldn’t be done.  I’m not a doctor, but I play one on the internet.

ASTROS – I don’t want to live in a world that the Pittsburgh Pirates are better than the Houston Astros… But, that being the case, when’s that moon colony going to be up and running?  The Bucs beat the Astros yesterday 7-4 with Wandy Rodriguez giving up five runs in 4-2/3 innings taking the loss.

DYNAMO – Goals from Brad Davis, Stuart Holden and Kei Kamara led the Dynamo(es) to a three to nil win over new club Toronto FC.  The golazos all came within 5 minutes of each other, a barrage that the Reds couldn’t recover from.  A whole two sentences about the Dynamo.  I’m officially pleased with myself.

UNIVERSITY of HOUSTON – Not necessarily playing in the NCAA tourney, however, it bears repeating.  Rice LOST.  For posterity’s sake, a final picture to start your afternoon.
