Daily FaF Smear (3/31/09)

The one where nobody gives an inch or a damn.

Memphis is no place for a man with such style.

Memphis is no place for a man with such style.

Is the Memphis domination of C-USA over?

With Billy Gillispie out in Kentucky and John Calipari’s predication to look for something bigger and better it would seem that way.  Kentucky has the program that Calipari has always wanted to coach, with the prestige that he’s always wanted to have.

Look at his resume… He left UMass after taking them to the Final Four and his star player left.  He left the Nets after he realized that they, well, sucked.  Now he’s been in Memphis for nine years.  Tigers, consider yourselves as coming out on top.  You got nine good years and two Elite Eights and a Final Four out of the deal.  Plus, several pounds of flesh from each of the other Conference USA whipping boys.  That will go high on the Black Market.

The numbers according to the various sources out there are around thirty-five million over eight years.  (That’s Houston Texans unproven free agent money!)  ESPN is saying that Calipari is “sleeping” on the offer right now.  That’s a lot of moolah to sleep on.  I would take the back pain of having to sleep on 35M worth of lumps in my mattress.

But, I have to say… This is getting me a little giddy inside.  Oh, hey, Billy.  If you need a place to stay for a couple years we’ll let you coach the University of Houston.  Don’t worry, we won’t tell Tom Penders.

Up ahead are your Houston sports updates -

Texans:  Ryan Moats is a bigger man than I.  He said on Good Morning America that he accepts the apology of Officer Powell and hopes that he was being sincere in his statements.  If Moats had challenged Powell to a ladder match and/or fight to the death I wouldn’t have said a word.  I think it would have been justifiable.

Rockets:  As I wrote yesterday, Shane Battier can do no wrong.  He is the NBA’s saint.  Battier and Carl Landry participated in some PR boosting in association with Direct Energy.  The Home Driveway Challenge, or something like that.  You need to know this.  You can’t just think the NBA is dunks and tattoos.

Astros:  Played the Phillies.  Promptly lost.  Opening Day, where are you?

DynamoAde Akinbiyi is officially part of the team, apparently.  But, if I may step on my soap-box for a minute.  What the hell is this guy doing stealing my picture [Ed. Note - Note really my picture, but I stole assimilated it first] and then misspelling “Chronicle?”  I guess “Chronical” just brought that little bit of flair that was missing from, you know, the real name of the publication.

Rice:  Hey, Owls, I didn’t forget you.  Here’s some pre-draft coverage of James Casey.  I make jokes about you guys a lot, but consider this my olive branch extended to you.  An olive branch with razors for leaves!  No, not really.  Just kidding.  Can’t you feel the love?

  1. Thank you to Webster’s for providing the following definition:

Chronical (adv.) – A word which could best be used to describe Ricky Williams’ lifestyle.

  2. The worst thing that can happen to CUSA is Calipari leaving. We need Memphis to remain excellent. The problem with CUSA isn’t the fact that Memphis dominates in hoops: the problem lies in the fact that other CUSA members need to upgrade themselves in hoops — e.g. tougher out of conference schedules, better recruiting, marketing, etc.

    • Needs more longer and seriouser

      • LOL…I’m serious…this is decidely bad for us. Even if we were to make the tournament next season (like that’ll fuckin happen), people will stay that the only reason we got in was because Memphis didn’t have Calipari anymore. I really don’t like backing into the tournament that way.

        • DSC, don’t lie. You would be happy with any method in which would mean a invitation to the tournament… LIAR!

  3. How about we just make the tournament first, then we can worry about whatever everyone thinks about our method of getting there (steroids, blatant bribes, whatever it may be)?
